Cessnock Water Supply Upgrade

As part of Stage 1B augmentation works, Hunter Water Corporation (HWC) increased the available water supply within the Cessnock area. The Stage 1B works incorporated the construction of approximately 3kms of pipelines, West Cessnock WPS [initially for the existing suction main (DN200).

This Contract involves the construction of a new pumping station and rising mains.

The works included but not limited to the following:
  • The construction of a new combined pump station and switchroom
  • Provision of two new pumps with delivery and suction lines cut-in to the existing header main
  • Supply of a new switchboards
  • Electrical installation
  • Telemetry and automation
  • PLC/SCADA programming
  • Interface with other Reservoir ar Mount view works – Value shut down & Connection of the water main, work collaboratively to complete and Participation in commission of reservoirs and control system with the Pumping station
  • Cross connections and hot tapping under pressure
  • Construction of a 1.3 KM of DN 375 PN 35 DICL Water Main PN 16 Flanges, Bends Gates Vale, air valves
  • Construction of a 1.6km 250 PVC-M PN 12 Water Main air valve and scours through Austar coal mine property
  • Trenchless road and creek crossings
  • Ecological assessment of tree clearings
Water Pumping Station
  • Construction of the pump station building including excavation, concrete work, brickwork, roofing, metalwork, ventilation, air conditioning, security system, and associated works
  • Construction of access driveway and hardstand and siteworks
  • Construction of flowmeter pit and supply and installation of DN300 electromagnetic flowmeter including installation of associated fittings, all electrical works and supply and installation of power supply and pipework including bypass
  • Construction of Pressure Reducing Valve pit and supply and installation of DN150 Pressure Reducing Valve including installation of associated valves, fittings, drainage pipework, all electrical works and supply and installation of power supply and pipework
  • Supply and install two horizontal split case centrifugal pumps complete with 75kW electric motors and baseplates
  • Supply and install pipework and fittings and steelwork
  • Supply and install electrical equipment, lighting, instrumentation, gauge board, wiring, conduits, cable tray, cabling and associated works
  • Engage and manage an Accredited Service Provider Level 1 and 2 to liaise with Ausgrid and construct power supply to site
  • Supply and install (include design of mounting details) telemetry aerial on building roof and associated works
  • Civil, mechanical, electrical, telemetry and SCADA work associated with items above. Access road and hard stand
  • Pre-commissioning and commissioning
  • Supply Operations and Maintenance manuals
  • Provide Work-as-Executed drawings
  • Restore all disturbed areas and provide landscaping for site
Challenges and achievement

Community Communication with numerous stakeholders, working in urban and residential areas. working with the mines, along roadways, alongside schools and sporting fields.

Ensuring minimum disruption to water and power services within the surrounding suburbs during the scheduled power outages, and service shutdowns.

Traffic management and pedestrian control for all works, pump station, along roadside, Mines schools and sporting fields.

Working with Auster Colliery and mitigating mine subsidence risk. working around closed shafts and rubble and latent conditions.

Offer solution of: Trenchless creek crossing to minimise environmental disturbance within the mining property. Trenchless road crossing for driveway and road intersection to minimize the traffic congestion and inconvenience to the local community.

Successfully coordinate and complete aboriginal archaeology digs within the Pump station area to the community satisfaction.

Completed works without Safety or Environmental incidents and satisfied reports from the auditors / inspectors.
