Replacement of Sewer line Islington

The construction of this pipeline required replacing a collapsed wastewater pipeline. The new pipeline was required to improve service to customers connected to the existing collapsed main and prevent environmental impacts. Kerroc offered Directional Drill as a solution.

The works were located within an urban environment, along a road corridor and through private residential and some cross connections commercial properties.

Various construction techniques were used including:

  • Open trenching
  • Directional Drill. DN 200 PE
  • Horizontal Boring DN 150 uPVC Pipe installed in steel casing.

To prevent accidental wastewater, release the two connections to the existing sewer were planned for and made during low flows and sewer levels were monitored upstream.

Restoration of site; included restoration of backyards to original condition, including the replacement of all fences and sheds, removed to complete the construction and re-establishment of all gardens and makes improvements

The scope of the work included but limited to:
  • Construction DN150 & DN 200 PVC-U class SN8. gravity sewer main; and side lines
  • Construction of seven new sewer access chambers
  • Connection between the constructed and existing gravity sewer, as well as all required house
  • Connections. Sewer to remain in operation for the duration of the construction works
  • Restoration and improvement work on private property
  • Testing and Commissioning
Challenges and achievement

Gardens and Back yards were limited in size, established for years, cluttered, or concreted. all which had to be removed to complete the construction, Restoration was to original conditions including fences and sheds and, in many cases, improvements were made, to the satisfaction of the residents.

An unexpected not shown on DYBD - Major Gas main was discovered in the line of excavation, After the service was discovered, excavation was stopped. Potholing was conducted to establish size, type, and exact location of service. Jemena was contacted and requested to redirect the gas main.

The works zones hazards included restricted work area, noise, deep excavations, confined spaces, underground services, above ground services (including overhead power lines) working along and within Heavy traffic, Residents Pedestrians and Property owners - The works were completed without incidents.

The communication and consultation Management Planning was successfully resulting in no complaints being received.

Traffic management Plans were designed and developed with consultation with Newcastle Council, Hunter Water corporation, Residents and Commercial property owners.
